I've noticed that only about 1/3 of the members are active and contributing and personally I joined this online coven fairly late but still find it immensely helpful, so that brings me to my main question: should we recruit/advertise for more members? I feel as if this online coven has a lot to offer yet with only about 5 members contributing, I feel like we should open up and accept some more people (but only if they're willing to be active and contribute). Your thoughts?

Meh. Personally, I don't really feel like we should actively look to recruit people. I mean if someone asks, or if you want to post about it on tumblr sure, but I mean, I don't want to go out of my way to get membership. I personally like the smaller closer feel.

Don't get me wrong, I love the closeness between us as well. But I feel like if we had just a few more members (less than 10 for sure, maybe 5 or so more?) not only would this forum be a lot more active, we'd have a few more witches who could contribute their knowledge and their crafts for us to learn from, and vice versa. With just approximately 5 constantly active members, I feel as if we're limited in terms of sharing knowledge and ideas and even bonding. I would just really like to be able to come to the forum any time of the day and see a couple new posts or threads rather than a new post(s) once or twice every day or so, you know? But I'd rather hear your guys' opinions and views on this first before I ask if it's okay to try to recruit just a couple more members!

I know this has been brought up about less/inactive users a few times since this was first created. Personally I'm still figuring out my craft for myself so it's hard for me to contribute to all of the posts and threads but I wanted to say that I am trying to be as active as I can (when I feel like I actually have something of value to add!)
I will agree with Jessica that I like the small feel as its still new to all of us and trying to get all of us talking at once is already difficult, that I imagine adding more people will be more so. But it would be good also to have more insights and opinions.

I feel right now since we're so new we need to stay closed. We may only be 5 or so people, but there is a lot of power here. Before we begin "recruiting" we may want to set guidelines and figure out if we want certain standards for our members, a ranking system, and until we figure out a better way to communicated regularly none of this can really be done.

Thanks everyone for the feedback. And those are good ideas, Syka! So, why don't we take the next couple (say 2-3, maybe more) weeks to start drawing up guidelines and standards and whatnot so we could possibly start gathering just a couple more members by the end of July/early August? It'll keep us (and the forum in general) active for the following few weeks with input from all of us and then we can hopefully start trying to recruit a select few more people. It's not like I want a vast majority of people to suddenly join, I'm only talking about recruiting a handful or so. I mean, 3-4 out of the 9 total members have been inactive since the very early creation of this forum (from what I'm reading on the "members" page) so that really only leaves 5 of us, and in no way do I wanna leave this online coven, I just really feel we need a couple more people to get this online coven really moving! But I can also see how as fairly new as this forum is, it may be too quick to recruit more. So that's why I'm recommending we take the next couple of weeks and sort things out (i.e. communication, activity, etc.) so that way if you guys do eventually decide to also recruit more people they'll be joining an organized and communicable group!

*EDIT: I just realized I posted this poll in the wrong thread and that it should be in the (obviously) polls and voting thread! Apologies, Kayla! I don't know if it's possible to move it or not*

I see you keep mentioned the "5 of us" considering only 5 of us are active, I was thinking maybe we should skype chat one night and try to hash some of this out. Also in terms of rankings; the 5 of us could be the decision board for the coven. Since what you're talking about could lead to something huge within the next year or so, it'd be good to establish authority, rules, and chain of command before hand.

Yes, a skype chat sounds perfect!! I'm honestly super available in the evenings and nights so I'm ready when you guys are! It would definitely help in coming to terms in agreements and what not rather than waiting for one of us to be online and responding to that post and waiting for the others to comment. And yes I love that idea of the five of us being the "decision board!" And I love your enthusiasm for the future, I would love for us to be huge within the next year or so

Sorry for coming to this so late! I have no idea how I just completely missed it haha
I agree with Jess to be honest. While I do enjoy the idea of getting more active members that can contribute more ideas, and generally a forum has tons of activity, I'm not sure I want us to be something huge within the next year or so. The idea of recruitment, to me, is just hearing people being like "yo that sounds interesting, can I join up?", and then giving them the chance, because who knows what they can contribute! And I've always viewed us as a sort of, democratic eclectic partially organized mess.
So I'm a little uncomfortable with the idea of us being a "decision board", as if we are in a position to judge the flocks of people who we'll encourage to come running. It implies we're gonna try to really advertise our coven, but then be picky about who comes in (like colleges sorta, lol). And that doesn't seem very fair.
The reason I've never really wanted to have a coven "leader" or "group of people in power" is in normal covens, this is very much based on magical experience and overall wiseness in magical matters. In this kind of environment, where we can't have physical meetings or a physical meeting space or ways to do group spells that aren't kinda messy and drawn out, I don't think it's appropriate?
I know I'm being very anarchist right now, and I'm surprising myself x] But I don't want to create an environment where I have to choose between a position of organized online leadership which might get in the way of real life, which is personally going to get very hectic really soon, or having less of a voice even though I sort of, created this whole thing.
One of my favorite parts about our coven right now is how relaxed it is. Is how, if I had a busy week, and I just need time off, I won't miss anything big if I'm not here for two to three days. That we're learning together.
Diversity of opinion and more people actively curious sounds very fun. This new structure to anticipate moving the coven in a very different direction (or so it feels to me), I'm not very comfortable with. So, yeah
And we can skype about it but ugh I'm a mess over skype, I like having just conversations like this, idk. But if a skype sounds the most useful for everyone, then let's go for it.

I didn't mean the whole decision board thing to be like a dictatorship type thing. I do agree that the overall feel of this coven is really nice. And the few of us that are active on the forum seem to really enjoy being here and making the connection which each other.
I just feel that open recruitment could get out of hand very easily. That letter a mass amount of people in could cause a lot of issues, or so much disorganized information coming at us; the original people get overwhelmed and leave.
Right now I think the best plan of action is to figure out how to have more forum activity from the members we already have and then get more into recruiting.
(I'm just saying, I work 70+ hours a week and still manage to check in a couple times a week)

I had someone on tumblr message me about the online coven. I need to give them the link to this page.

I think it might be time we re-address this issue. The forum has been quite stagnant lately. It would be nice to have people added for more interaction.

I agree. I mostly come here, see nothing has been updated, and then leave. So, maybe we could each post something on our tumblrs?
