So I have this little collection of wooden stars that I choose wandering the shelves at Michaels as a) a cute way to unite my interest in runes with my love of astrology aesthetic and b) they were cheap and a good size. I am very excited to use them! But first, I need to make them.
As they are just plain wood, I've hit a bit of a roadblock. Do I want to paint them? Should I adorn them in some way? How do I want to present the rune: carved in, or just painted on?
My vision is to paint them, maybe black, and the runes be carved in and then the dips painted gold or silver. I have gold and silver paint pens (though the silver's almost out methinks). What do you guys think?
And if any of you have experience wood carving/painting before, do you know how I can go about this without any fancy tools? What paint works best: acrylic, or oil? Which will set best? Is there a topcoat I can put on that will protect them?
From an excited but stumped witch, blessed be and thanks for input

I'm not too artsy but I did have to paint a wooden paddle for my fraternity and used acrylic paint and that worked pretty well! I first applied a coat of white primer and then painted several coats of black over the white primer until I achieved the desired blackness. Unfortunately, that's all I can really contribute :/

So I would suggest oil for longevity and a laquer or finish for added protection. Acrylic is good too and cheaper but not as durable. Good luck!

Luckily I have a lot of oil paint chilling around, so it won't be expensive to use what I already have. I'll do that! As for wood carving--as someone who is a cheapskate and isn't sure I'd use a lot of wood tools anyway-- does anyone know good ways to carve wood?

There are some cheap kits you can find. Also a scalpel art tool ( but be super careful)

I took woodworking class for four years in middle school (private middle schools do the weirdest shit I s2g) so I'm familiar with wood-working, but I know how expensive/difficult getting good materials can be, I wish I could just like, borrow a workspace and tools for it, you know? But if you said there's some cheap kits, I'll go a'looking!
